Alumni Story: Peter Osborne

Peter Osborne ’09:

Peter’s Story:

I am currently a Career and Technical Education (CTE) Consultant at the Maine Department of Education, where I specialize in technical standards and assessments for CTE schools throughout Maine. I work with teachers, directors, and others to select, review, and implement technical industry standards and assessments in a wide variety of programs — from business to automotive technology to culinary arts to engineering, and more!

From a very early age, my “dream job” was to be a teacher. Since attending UMF for secondary education, my concept of teaching and education has widened dramatically. My professional career in education has spanned working with students in a federal job-training program, overseeing training and community development in higher education, serving as career counselor and teaching career development courses, spending evenings teaching technology skills to adult learners, to where I am now at the Department of Education.

If I had to offer one piece of advice for someone thinking about their life after UMF, I would say to always be weary of your comfort zone. By definition, staying in your “comfort zone” means you’re not trying new things, having new experiences, or otherwise growing. If you never choose to venture out beyond the edges of where you’re comfortable, you’re missing out on a lot of new potential opportunities. They say you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.
