The Soil Blocker – Ironwood Farm

Cyanotype, 15” x 22”

First developed in Europe and then adapted for small farm use by Eliot Coleman, soil
blockers offer an alternative to plastic cell trays that help eliminate waste and create an
ideal environment for young plants. To use one, you pack the metal frame full of dirt and
punch down the handle, leaving behind nutrient dense soil cubes, ready to house a
seed. Once the seedlings mature, farmers transplant these little squares and their
young, hopeful plants into the field.
