Ironwood Organic Farm- Albion, Maine

Nell Finnigan and Justin Morace

Ironwood is a horse-powered farm in the rolling hills of Central Maine. Nell Finnigan and Justin Morace bought the place in 2014 from a generational farming family and transformed the land back into a working farm. Originally a graphic designer, Justin decided to become a farmer after co-founding a draft horse rescue and Nell, a native Mainer has a degree in Plant Soil and Insect Sciences from UMass. Today they combine their skills growing over 10 acres of diverse organic vegetables with the help of four Belgian draft horses, a hardworking crew, and their two-year-old son Harlan. You can find Ironwood produce at co-ops and grocery stores throughout the state and at the Saturday Orono Farmer’s market.

“Small farms are one of the little rural industries in the state that are growing, so if we can be a small business that employs local people, I think that’s incredibly positive… I hope it’s just the beginning of a chain reaction of folks deciding that they want to farm.” – Nell Finnigan

“It’s so hopeful that young people want to come to rural Maine and be stewards of land that people have farmed for generations.  – Nell Finnigan

“Farming ended up being a really nice combination of intellectual and physical work and I decided that it was the life I wanted, and that’s what farming is, it’s your life, not a job.” – Nell Finnigan

“I think that small farms have a lot to offer… beyond the environmental impacts, we’re creating communities around our small farms, which I love.”  – Nell Finnigan
