Hurricane Valley Farm, West Falmouth, Maine

Farmer John Yanga

John Yanga is part of a group of New American farmers, refugees, and immigrants from South Sudan, Rwanda, Somalia, Republic of Congo, and Afghanistan, who are turning Hurricane Valley Farm into a community center for locally grown food. John grew up in South Sudan and fled the war with his mother and wife Rebecca.  They grow a variety of crops common to Sudan; potatoes, okra, amaranth, African eggplant, and blackeyed peas with a focus on the nutritious leaves. Along with developing vegetable gardens using sustainable and pesticide-free practices, the farmers at Hurricane Valley tend bees and have plans for a herd of goats and an orchard. Produce from the farm is available at the Saturday Deering Oaks Farmer’s market in Portland or through a CSA membership.

“The reason why I’m farming is because I love it.  I love to share food with others”.   – John Yanga

“Farmers here are generous, everybody wants to help anyone who wants to farm…of course, it’s not easy to farm…it’s not easy to get land.”  John Yanga
