Students in Misty Krueger’s spring 2022 Honors 277H “Monsters” course studied monsters across time, cultures, and regions of the world. In the second part of the course, all twelve students worked collaboratively to devise a single monster project inspired by Heather Frigiola’s book, Monsters and Mythical Creatures from around the World. When given options for a project that would allow every student to contribute easily and equally, the students settled on a pop-up gallery exhibit, and they decided to work in clusters to represent monsters from across the globe: Europe, Asia, the Americas, Africa, Australia, and the Pacific islands.
This exhibit asks viewers to think about how monsters have been created across time and across our planet. Some of these monsters come from certain regions of the world and specific folklore. Others have counterparts in many regions of the world, but are known by different names and have different tales. Some of these monsters you might have heard of before, and others might be completely unknown to you…until now. Please enjoy the stories being told in this exhibit as well as the tremendous effort students put into the pieces on display. This exhibit is a celebration of monsters and the fine work students produce at the University of Maine at Farmington. The exhibition will be on view from April 27 – May 2, 2022. Students will be in Emery from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27, to answer questions.
