300 Fore Street, Portland

The opening of the new 300 Fore Street building located in downtown Portland took place in January and is the home of several University partners including University of Maine School of Law, University of Maine Graduate and Professional Center, University of Maine Portland Gateway and the University of Maine Graduate School of Business.  The classroom and audiovisual technology for the project totaling roughly $775,000 includes seven classrooms and seminar spaces, nine conference rooms and digital signage.

The building includes:

  • Wireless screen sharing devices, ScreenBeam, allowing faculty and students to display content from laptops and mobile devices through Miracast or Airplay.
  • All classrooms, conference rooms and seminar spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones and a digital audio mixer to provide both presentation and web conferencing capabilities
  • One of the classrooms includes the ability to split and combine to become one larger classroom or two separate classrooms

Due to unprecedented manufacturing and supply chain issues caused by the COVID pandemic and other global events, the equipment and systems have not been fully installed.  The Classroom Technology team worked closely with the stakeholders and the vendors to accommodate the functional needs for the Spring semester.  The audiovisual/classroom technology systems will be fully installed and operational during the Summer.

Managed Print Services

During the spring semester, new Xerox Multifunction devices will be installed throughout the University of Maine System along with new software to better manage printing, copying, scanning and faxing.

As of April 1, Xerox devices have been deployed at UMF, UMPI, UMFK and the facility at 300 Fore Street that serves MaineLaw, Maine Business School and others. To date, 872 users have printed or copied over 230,000 pages . This represents about 20% of the total devices planned for our campuses. Other locations will see new devices arriving between now and June.

Program Highlights

  • Find-Me Printing with Secure Release
    • Send a print job whenever, from wherever you want and don’t worry about “hurrying” to get to the printer. Your job will only print when you are at the printer and ready to pick it up.  It won’t be sitting in a pile of papers for anyone to see!
  • Access to more devices and more features
    • Is the printer that you normally use really busy?  No problem – you can visit a printer on another floor or in another office to print your jobs.
    • Does the printer nearest you not have a stapler or color or handle 11×17 paper?  No problem – you can use one that has the needed features for that special print job.
      • 92% of the Xerox devices are color capable (compared to 20% of the older devices)
  • Better for the environment!
    • In a recent survey, we found that 74% of respondents consider environmental sustainability important when printing and copying.  Find-Me printing reduces waste by not printing jobs that are not really needed.  Our print management software tracks these important metrics.

Environmental information shows by not printing 2,120 jobs, there are 2.06 trees saved, 218.5 kg of CO2 saved, and 13,682.4 hours of equivalent bulb hours.
